The unspoiled destination Dolpo has got many tourist attractions among them the Phoksundo lake is the one , the turquoise freshwater lake in the dolpo is a beautiful and the deepest lake in nepal. High himalyan culture of the buddhist and the Bon-po religious people are the predominant of the area and they take this Phoksundo lake as a holy lake. Beautiful Phoksundo lake is situated in the elevation of 3611m from sea level inside shey Phoksundo national park. The main physical attraction of the shey Phoksundo national park, the Phoksundo lake is spreaded on 4.94 km2 with depth of 145m.
Shey Phoksundo National Park is the largest and only trans-Himalayan national park in Nepal. It was established in 1984 and covers an area of 3,555 km2 .To access the Phoksundo lake we have to encompass many trans-himalayan villages with its beautiful landscape and biodiversity. The culture and ritual and daily lifestyle of the high himalayan people is another feature of this splendid trekking. The dolpo region settlements are proclaimed as the highest elevation situated settlements in the world where around 9000 people used to live. Trekkers will get the wonderful chances to feel the buddhist bon-po religion during the trek in this area. Monasteries, chortiens and thangka paintings of this area are spectacular and praise worthy. The most famous, Shey Gompa was established in the 11th Century. Thashung Gompa located near Phoksundo Lake was built about 900 years ago to conserve wildlife.The inhabitants of this area are mainly engaged with agriculture and collection of herbal products from the park.
Shey phoksundo national park has elevation ranges from 2130m upto 6883m so we will get a different geographical landscape with amazing biodiversity during our trek. The flora fauna on this trek is extremely diverse rhododendron,caragana shrubs,salix,juniper ,white himalayan birch,and occasional silver fir high meadows of the himalaya on this trek.The park also contains 286 species of ethnobotanical importance. The park provides important habitat for endangered species including the snow leopard, grey wolf, musk deer, and blue sheep, goral, great Tibetan sheep, Himalayan tahr, leopard, jackal, and Himalayan black bear are also found in the park. The park is home to six reptiles and 29 species of butterfly, including the highest flying butterfly in the world, Paralasa nepalaica. The park provides habitat for over 200 species of birds, among which include yellow-throated marten, Tibetan partridge, wood snip, white-throated tit, wood accentor, and crimson-eared rosefinch.( source DNPWC)
